Review: Degree of Resistance

4.5 stars

This near-future dystopia surprised me for how lovable it is. The heartwarming story of a woman finding a long-lost love, it’s full of fantastic worldbuilding. Like engineers being upper class, just under the Investors. (Not that I’m biased.) Like the main character being a mechanical engineer and a maker. Like the charming application of cybernetic technologies in both civilian and military applications, withheld by the evil government to control its populace. I’ll be looking for more of Cameron’s scifi romance.

Look, I’m allowed to be excited by having female mech-e’s in fiction. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. It’s like having a part of myself that only exists in the real world, and I never hoped to find it in fiction. I imagine there are a lot of people who relate to that feeling, and I want us all to see ourselves in more books!
